2.12 Smoke and Heat Detectors
Your home is protected by a smoke detector located in the hallway and a heat alarm in the living / dining area. The units are hard wired to the mains electric with battery back-up incase of a power failure.
The batteries are lithium rechargeable and should never be removed or swapped for an alternative type of battery. The units will require replacing approximately 10 years form the date of installation – there is a small sticker on the side of the outer casing.

- A small GREEN indicator light (LED) should be visible through the detector grill indicting that AC supply is healthy. A RED indicator light (LED) should also flash approximately every 40 seconds to indicate the battery is healthy.
- If smoke / heat is detected, the unit will emit a loud pulsating alarm and a RED indicator light (LED) will be flashing quickly until the air is clear.
- If the alarm goes off and there is no sign of smoke, heat or noise to indicate that there is a fire, you should get everyone in your home into a safe place, before you start investigating. Check the whole property very carefully incase there is a small fire smouldering somewhere. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE ALARM. If no fire is apparent, ventilate the room and / or operate the alarm pause, if fitted.
TESTING YOUR ALARMS
- It is recommended that you test the alarm units once a week to ensure the detector is working correctly.
- Push and hold the TEST button for approximately ten seconds. A loud pulsating alarm should sound and a RED flashing indicator light (LED) can be seen to indicate the correct function. The alarm will stop when the button is released.
- Please note: For multiple interconnected alarms test each alarm, checking that the alarm is triggered on all other alarms installed.
MAINTAINING YOUR ALARMS
- Clean your alarm regularly to reduce the risk of false alarms. The detectors are sensitive to dust and you should periodically remove any dust with the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner by cleaning gently around the front grilled section and sides.
- Check that the green mains power light is on. If it is off the alarm is not receiving mains power and is being powered from its internal back-up cells. The beeps indicate that they are depleted. The cells are not replaceable. Re-connect the mains, check fuse, circuit breakers and wiring. If in doubt contact a qualified electrician. The beeps should cease within 2 hours as the cells charge up. Fully charged, the cells will provide up to 6 months back-up without mains power.
- If the beeping has persisted for over 2 hours with the green light on – the rechargeable cells may be defective. The unit must be replaced.
- Completely cover your alarm when redecorating to prevent dust or other contamination damaging the unit.
